In her welcoming remarks at Monday's Opening Session, ASHP President Leigh A. Briscoe-Dwyer outlined the past year's advocacy and leadership accomplishments and urged attendees to make the most of an exciting week in New Orleans.
“There’s nothing like the Midyear meeting for learning, building connections, and finding new directions,” Briscoe-Dwyer said.
Advocacy and shortages
“We have many success stories to share and celebrate on the advocacy front,” Briscoe-Dwyer said.
- She noted that 30 states now allow pharmacists to enroll as healthcare providers under Medicaid.
- ASHP also continues to support members through advocacy and partnerships that strengthen the 340B Drug Pricing Program.
- “In collaboration with the American Hospital Association ... and 340B Health, we are filing more than a dozen amicus briefs in courts nationwide to safeguard 340B pricing at contract pharmacies,” Briscoe-Dwyer said. “We will continue to fight further attempts to undermine the benefits this program has for our patients.”
- By providing guidance to members and federal partners about navigating the shortage of IV fluids caused by Hurricane Helene, ASHP continues to demonstrate its “decades-long leadership on drug shortages,” Briscoe-Dwyer said.
Remembering and encouraging leaders
Briscoe-Dwyer paid tribute to ASHP Past President Sara J. White, a leadership icon who died in September.
“Sara’s wisdom and tireless advocacy have left an unforgettable impact on all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed. We honor her memory today and every day that we work as pharmacy leaders,” Briscoe-Dwyer said.
She also recognized pharmacy professionals who have completed ASHP’s Certified Pharmacy Executive LeaderSM program and joined the growing ranks of colleagues with this important leadership credential.
Storytelling
The Opening Session featured an update on ASHP’s We’re Your Pharmacist public awareness campaign, which continues to tell the profession’s patient care stories. And Briscoe-Dwyer noted that the Midyear meeting itself is “a prime opportunity for us to use the power of storytelling to shape the future of pharmacy.”
She also expressed ASHP’s gratitude to its Midyear attendees and all members.
“Your passion and commitment inspire us every day,” she said.
