Jen Groves and Kaylee Clark of The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy took top honors at this year's annual ASHP National Clinical Skills Competition, held at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Clinical Skills Competition challenges student pharmacists to analyze a complex patient case and make appropriate treatment recommendations. The case scenarios are based on situations the students may encounter when they practice as pharmacists.

Jaclyn Feingold and Maggie Donlevie from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey's Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy took second place this year, and Kaitlyn Weber and Sophie Kovalenko from the University of Missouri—Kansas City School of Pharmacy finished in third place.

The annual competition is a unique opportunity for students to represent their school and apply their clinical knowledge in an interactive format in front of seasoned pharmacy professionals. This year’s event drew teams from 128 schools and colleges of pharmacy.

Each two-person team completed a written case study Dec. 6 during a closed session. The 10 finalist teams presented their treatment recommendations Dec. 7 before a panel of judges and a live audience.

Members of the 10 finalist teams received a three-year subscription to UpToDate® Lexidrug™ from Wolters Kluwer, $150 in gift cards, and their choice of an ASHP self-assessment resource. Each member of the top three teams additionally received a cash award.

The Clinical Skills Competition was sponsored by the ASHP Foundation with support from Wolters Kluwer. Each team member received a complimentary Midyear registration to attend the national competition.

The competition would not be possible without the hard work of volunteer judges, case writers, and faculty coordinators who dedicated countless hours to ensure this event was a success.
