This year’s Commission on Goals convened March 3 to discuss strategies to prepare the healthcare workforce to optimize patient-centered care and medication use in a digital future occupied by disruptive innovations and evolving technologies.

The 2020 Commission on Goals*, an interdisciplinary group of thought leaders that reviews healthcare trends and provides guidance on potential strategic areas of focus for ASHP, built on last year’s meeting that centered around the impact of artificial intelligence on healthcare and pharmacy practice.

The commission includes leaders from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, academia, industry, and government. They were charged this year with bringing their unique perspective on how collectively the following goals can be achieved:

  • Identifying strategies to ensure a robust, competent, and skilled healthcare professional workforce that can adapt to innovations and evolving technologies in healthcare to better serve patients
  • Identifying the roles that healthcare professions, colleges, associations, government, and accrediting bodies play in restructuring the workforce for the digital future

The commission emphasized the need for collaborative dialogue and focused on the following areas:

  • Advances in healthcare technologies
  • Advances in therapeutic modalities
  • Optimization of medication use
  • Enhancing access to care
  • Healthcare workforce preparation

Members of the commission also discussed the actions that the healthcare industry and associations will need to take to influence the development and safe and effective use of new technologies and the need for data and evidence to propel technologies forward on behalf of patients.

Proceedings of the commission meeting will be published online ahead of print in a forthcoming issue of AJHP.
