On Thursday, ASHP’s Michael Ganio appeared before a Senate committee weighing country-of-origin labeling on medications to urge the federal government to also adopt broader policies aimed at strengthening the drug supply chain.
“ASHP strongly supports transparency in the pharmaceutical supply chain,” Ganio, ASHP senior director of pharmacy practice and quality, told members of the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
Ganio asked the committee also to consider policies that would “directly incentivize domestic manufacturing, improve regulatory oversight or inspections of manufacturing facilities, and ensure Americans have access to high-quality pharmaceuticals.”
These policy changes are included in ASHP’s drug shortage recommendations, which include options for incentivizing manufacturer quality and purchasing from reliable suppliers.
