ASHP is pleased to announce the promotion of David Chen, BSPharm, MBA, to vice president for pharmacy leadership and planning. In this new role, Chen will help lead key strategic initiatives, including coordinating ASHP’s strategic planning and the ASHP Leadership Center and its alignment with the ASHP Innovation Center, ASHP Foundation, and other ASHP offices.

Chen joined ASHP in 2004, marking the start of a distinguished 20-year career at the organization. He most recently served as assistant vice president for pharmacy leadership and planning. In this capacity, Chen led the launch of the ASHP Leadership Center, where he works with pharmacy leaders to identify and address opportunities, trends, and challenges impacting pharmacy practice. He helped conceptualize and launch ASHP’s Pharmacists in C-Suites group, the Pharmacy Executive Leadership Alliance, and the Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residents’ Collaborative.

Chen continues to serve the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Practice Leaders. He also served as director of the Specialty Pharmacy Practitioners and Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners, where he supported member innovation with specialty pharmacy, medication therapy management, and ambulatory care practice model growth.

With a deep knowledge of key issues affecting pharmacy practice, Chen has helped shape ASHP’s annual strategic planning retreats, joint sessions with ASHP’s policy committees, numerous ASHP practice summits, and the ASHP Commission on Goal. He has also supported the establishment of new practice groups, advanced key advocacy issues, and developed a wide range of resources for ASHP members.

“David has consistently demonstrated his expertise and passion for supporting our members in tackling some of the profession’s most critical issues as we shape the future of pharmacy,” said ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz, PharmD, Sc.D. (Hon), FASHP. “We are thrilled to have him step into this new role, where his dedication to innovation and excellence will further advance pharmacy practice.”

Prior to joining ASHP, Chen was director of pharmacy at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Maryland, including the Kessler/Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital. He also served as a director of pharmacy in Texas and Florida and as a central operations supervisor for the University of Maryland Medical Center Pharmacy.

Chen received his BSPharm from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and completed the Director-in-Training program for Owen Healthcare, Inc. in Texas. He earned his MBA from the Loyola University Maryland.
