International pharmacists representing six countries will highlight how they have used management, technology and more to advance pharmacy practice in global settings.

The ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition has hosted an internationally-themed educational session in conjunction with the Donald E. Francke Medal for several years. This afternoon, attendees will hear from international pharmacists representing six countries who will describe ways in which their expertise in formulary management, use of technology, leveraging pharmacist scope of practice, and demonstration of leadership provide safe, high-quality, and innovative services to advance pharmacy practice in global settings. This session titled “Journey to Excellence: Providing Safe, High-Quality, and Innovative Pharmacy Services in International Practice Settings (featuring the Donald E. Francke Medal Lecture),” will be held on Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. in the Mandalay Bay South Convention Center, Lagoon L, Level 2.

Toyin Tofade, MS, PharmD, BCPS, CPCC, FFIPDr. Toyin Tofade, MS, PharmD, BCPS, CPCC, FFIP, president of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and  recipient of the 2022 ASHP Board of Directors’ Donald E. Francke Medal, will present her lecture, “Leading with Heart in Service of Global Initiatives.” The educational part of the program will follow, featuring short, practical presentations to provide a forum for the speakers to exchange ideas regarding global trends and best practice in international pharmacy settings. Speakers will reflect on successful pharmacy services or challenges seen in countries that may have broad applicability in the United States and other locations. Sharing of ideas with an international audience helps shape best practice standards, which is increasingly important to regulatory bodies, public health entities, and as international accreditation standards progress. In some cases, awareness of the inequities in the provision of and access to pharmacy services in fragile states and/or crises bring light to necessary strategies and tactics required to care for communities.

A small professional poster walk as part of the International Registrants Gathering and Reception will take place shortly after the education session. The poster walk offers the opportunity for select international attendees to present their work in a more intimate setting. Participants in the poster walk will have increased engagement and discussion with the authors.

The session’s podium presentations and subsequent poster walk at the private event give international attendees additional opportunities at the Midyear meeting to showcase the state of and advances in pharmacy practice within their respective countries.
