Launched in December 2019, ASHP's Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) 2030 provides pharmacy teams with guidance for advancing healthcare, patient outcomes, and pharmacy practice. The guidance offered by the PAI recommendations helps pharmacists, health systems, and pharmacy leaders in their ongoing pursuit of the optimal, safe, and effective use of medications.
Amid the numerous challenges and opportunities confronting the pharmacy workforce, the PAI 2030 Self-Assessment Tool has helped identify and prioritize key areas for improvement. With over 1,300 assessments completed to determine the degree of alignment with the PAI 2030 recommendations, ASHP members have used those insights to influence the formation of goals and objectives for a practice setting, an organization, or state-level efforts.
Although progress on the PAI 2030 Focused Initiatives has been inconsistent, with advancement in some areas but marginal progress in others, the sharing of real-world stories brings ideas to life and motivates others to act. PAI 2030 Self-Assessment Tool action plan trends through September 2025 identify tasks such as closing gaps with patient care transitions and advancing the role and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians as the most feasible and impactful areas of focus.
By sharing how efforts were mobilized or progress was achieved, success can be amplified, as evidenced by Pharmacy Tech Improves Patient Outcomes at UK King’s Daughters Medical Center, Corewell Health’s Pharmily of Technicians Promotes Patient Safety, and A Safer Transition from Hospital to Home: Pharmacy Program Helps Discharged Patients with Medications.
In September 2025, ASHP convened an advisory panel to initiate an effort to reconceptualize the recommendations of PAI 2030 for a new target year. Although we’ve just reached the midpoint of PAI 2030, the reimagining work is a necessary response to rapidly evolving practice and technology, new therapeutic innovations, workforce dynamics, changing legislative and regulatory frameworks, and emerging challenges and opportunities in patient care and pharmacy practice.
The 2025 Midyear offers programming related to each of the five PAI 2030 recommendation domains.
